What can Freeman Capital do for me?

How does Freeman Capital work?

Freeman Capital is focused on helping you build your generational wealth. We work with you from cash flow, budgeting, improving your credit, financial planning, and investing. We are a fiduciary, which means we act in your best interest.

We’ll ask a bit about you when you sign up. We’ll also gather information when you sync your outside accounts. Then, we’ll meet with you one-on-one to help understand not just your finances but you and what is important to you. Next, we help you set financial goals and set you up with investment portfolios for each goal.

For your long-term financial needs (like retirement, next year’s vacation, or down payment), our investment strategy is built on low-cost ETFs (exchange-traded funds) and a risk profile based on how long you plan to invest.

What are your fees? How does pricing work?

Get started for no upfront cost! We know how hard it is to get started, so we made it easy:

  • You get a free consultation with a member of the Freeman Team
  • You can start investing at any dollar amount

Financial Planning: We have several plans from free financial planning tools, to dedicated financial planning assistance. The fees are all charged monthly and you can get your own custom quote by clicking on “Start for Free”.

Investing: 0.20% per year on your invested balance, which covers all trading costs. Also, there are no additional transaction fees.

Retirement: You can access our retirement planning tools without funding an account simply by syncing your existing accounts. Once you transfer retirement assets (like an IRA) we will charge you a 0.20% management fee per year.

We have no minimum balance requirements across all of our accounts.

How does Freeman Capital compare to other financial companies?

We like to point to three major ways we’re focused on the customer, perhaps more so than other financial companies, including other robo-advisors and digital banks.

  1. We’re a fiduciary—we are required to act in your best interests and we’re intentional about avoiding conflicts of interest. For instance, we don’t build our own funds and then recommend them to our own customers if it’s not in their best interest, the way some other companies do.
  2. Our platform combines powerful technology with personalized advice developed by our passionate team of experts. When you have questions, our Customer Support team is ready to help you with account questions and troubleshooting.
  3. We help you manage the full spectrum of your money, together in one place for a low, transparent cost. Even if you don’t fund, we provide advice on your existing outside accounts, as we help you compile your full financial picture.

How do you keep my money safe?

Your investments are SIPC protected—up to $500,000 per legal account via our investment partner Betterment.com. This can protect against the loss of your stocks, bonds, cash, etc. in the event that Betterment liquidates. What you should remember is that SIPC protection does not protect against market changes in your account. The risks inherent in investing are tradeoffs you make to pursue investment returns. We design our portfolio to aim for the highest projected returns given your risk level.

How does Freeman Capital make money?

Freeman Capital makes money in two simple ways:

  1. Our flat management fee for investing and automated advice—0.20%
  2. Our over-the-phone/video financial planning advice packages

We don’t earn revenue from any funds we’ve selected for your portfolio. We also don’t make money in our trading practices. That’s all because we’re built to align Freeman Capital’s interests with your own.

No, every one of our clients works with a member of our dedicated CFP® Professionals. We encourage our clients to ask as many questions as they want. We believe it fosters a stronger relationship, builds trust, and allows our CFP® Professionals to better know their clients so they can be even more insightful about planning.

Does Freeman Capital do client meetings in the evenings?

Absolutely. You are working during the day, or caring for your family or maybe even starting your next business. We get it. Also, meetings can be as short or as long as our clients like.

How often will I meet my CFP® Professional?

It’s entirely up to you. You always have access and can meet whenever and however many times you want. We plan on monthly calls but you can always pay for more if you want.

Our goal is to maximize the time we spend together. We can’t stress enough that our door is always open and we are always available.

How does Freeman Capital think about managing money?

We believe in diversification and passive management as a general methodology. We want to be market participants rather than trying to beat the market by picking stocks. We are focused on minimizing fees and maximizing diversification.

I’m not sure I need financial planning. Can I talk to someone before signing up?

Yes, you can! Every one of our clients meets with a member of our team before signing up. We’ll work with you to understand your current financial picture, as well as your short term and long term goals, ensuring your planner relationship is set up for success from day 1.

Here you get a dedicated CFP® Professional that will help plan a path toward financial prosperity. All of our CFP® Professionals have a wealth of experience and knowledge and come with the highest credentials.

What does a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ (CFP) Professional do?

A CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ Professional helps clients achieve their financial and personal goals. Here, our CFP® Professionals are part coach, part advocate, all partner. We are in this with you. We take a holistic approach with an emphasis on your entire financial life – not just investments. Ultimately, our goal is to create a path towards financial prosperity and peace of mind so you can focus on your family, career, that trip of a lifetime or retirement.

Can Freeman Capital help me pick my employee benefits?

Yes, it’s one of our core services. We are there for you for each and every individual enrollment period.

Can Freeman Capital help me with my stock option plan?

Of course. In fact, it’s another one of our core services we provide for our clients. We analyze and consult on the tax impact these option plans may create and then take a look at how they affect the rest of your portfolio to set up the best plan for you. Once again, we want to consult on all of the parts of your financial life – not just the money you’ve entrusted us to manage directly.

How do I know I’ll be getting the best advice?

As fiduciaries, we are legally bound to give you advice that serves your best interest. We strenuously vet our advisors to ensure our clients are working with excellent practitioners. And on a side note, we believe in working with nice, honest people.

What is a fiduciary?

A fiduciary is a person who holds a legal and ethical relationship of trust with clients. They are legally bound to make recommendations in the best interest of those clients. Also, all our CFP® Professionals are fiduciaries on behalf of our clients.

How do I start investing?

What investments do you offer?

For each financial goal you set at Freeman Capital, we recommend a specific portfolio for you—an allocation of stock and bonds within our portfolio strategy that suits your needs. This goal-specific portfolio, built of low-cost exchange-traded funds (ETFs), is designed to reflect the global financial market, and is also designed to help maximize expected returns while minimizing risk.

You can also select from additional portfolio strategies, if you have specific interests, such as socially responsible investing (SRI). We also offer Goldman Sachs Smart Beta, a factor-based portfolio strategy, and a BlackRock Target Income portfolio, which only includes bonds.

How do I move my money into Freeman Capital?

You can move money to Freeman Capital by:

  1. Transferring investments from another provider.
  2. Linking a bank account to make deposits.

If you wish to transfer investments from a personal brokerage account, you may be eligible for an ACATS transfer, which moves your holdings to our investment partner, Betterment without selling them first.

If you roll over 401(k), 403(b), or IRA assets to Betterment, your previous provider will typically sell the investments with no tax consequences, and transfer the cash value to Betterment.

If you bank elsewhere, you can link your bank account to make deposits and set up recurring automatic deposits.

What types of accounts do you offer?

We offer account types for many different purposes.

For your investments, you can use either a personal taxable account or a joint taxable account with your spouse or partner (sometimes labeled “brokerage accounts” at other providers). You can also invest for your existing trust. For retirement savings, you can save using a traditional IRA, Roth IRA, or a SEP IRA. See account types.

Account types we don’t currently offer: 529 accounts, custodial accounts for minors (e.g., UTMA), or “solo 401(k)” plans.

How easy is it to make withdrawals?

We support you in making withdrawals, while also focusing on keeping you informed about how you may be impacted.

For your investments, we’ll let you know of the possible tax impact of a withdrawal before your make it. Then, we sell your investments and transfer the money to your linked bank account. This process generally takes 4-5 business days.

How do I plan for my retirement?

How do I plan for my retirement?

If you want to get on track for retirement, we can help. First, we’ll ask a bit about you and your household. You can also sync your existing employer plans and retirement assets (like an IRA) to your Betterment account to give us more context.

Then, we’ll make suggestions for how you should save across each of your accounts moving forward. You can get all of this retirement advice free of charge without even funding an account.

Once you get a plan set, you can invest for retirement in an IRA or taxable investment account.

Can Freeman Capital help me with my 401k?

Yes, we believe in a holistic approach to managing all of your assets. We can help you all your assets even if you don’t move them to Freeman Capital. We want to help you.

Can Freeman Capital help me with my IRA and brokerage account?

Yes, we can manage assets directly for clients or provide guidance if clients would rather hold their assets on their own.

How do I choose the right account—IRAs, 401(k)s—for my retirement?

Our retirement advice give you personalized “how to save” advice. We help you deposit into the right account or employer plan, based on your income, age, and tax situation. We can also take into account your spouse’s income.

How does Freeman Capital work once I’m in retirement and making withdrawals?

Once you let us know that you’ve reached retirement, our advice changes from helping you reach your savings goal to helping you make safe withdrawals that are unlikely to deplete your retirement funds too quickly. Our withdrawal advice can be automated to help you receive your retirement income like a regular paycheck.

Do you help with other types of planning?

Yes. While retirement is generally the most complex area of financial planning, we can help you set up a plan for other important areas of life, like saving for your or a child’s education, managing your trust, or prioritizing your financial goals that could affect your future retirement.

We encourage you to set up a financial planning subscription to get set up for success in any of these areas. Our team of CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNERS™ are happy to help you devise a plan and get your goals set up.
